Perception Of Nursing As A Profession And Career Preference Towards Nursing -A Survey Among Higher Secondary School Students

As per the initiative of the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, GRT College of Nursing organized a series of Career Guidance Programmes for higher secondary school students to create awareness about nursing as a rewarding and noble profession.

The programmes were conducted at the following schools:

03 July 2026: Government Higher Secondary School, Arcot Kuppam

06 July 2026: St. Andrew’s Higher Secondary School, Arakkonam

07 July 2026: CSI Central Higher Secondary School, Arakkonam

During the sessions, students were provided with comprehensive information about the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Nursing programme, including its scope, career opportunities, eligibility criteria, admission process, scholarships, higher education opportunities, and employment prospects in India and abroad. Informative pamphlets highlighting the scope and opportunities in the nursing profession were distributed to all participating students.

As part of the programme, a survey titled “Perception of Nursing as a Profession and Career Preference Towards Nursing – A Survey among Higher Secondary School Students”** was conducted to assess students’ perceptions of the nursing profession and their career preferences. The survey aimed to understand the level of awareness, identify influencing factors, and promote informed career decision-making among school students.

The resource persons encouraged students to consider nursing as a profession dedicated to compassionate care, leadership, and lifelong learning while emphasizing the increasing demand for qualified nursing professionals in the healthcare sector.

The sessions were conducted by Dr. Angel Shalini, Professor, Department of Psychiatric Nursing, at Government Higher Secondary School, Arcot Kuppam, and St. Andrew’s Higher Secondary School, Arakkonam. The programme at CSI Central Higher Secondary School was conducted by Mrs. Jayanthy, Professor, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Mrs. Kerith Evanjelin, Assistant Professor.
